Eisenmenger Complex and the Adult Patient
Patients with Eisenmenger Complex often lead long, active lives. However, they must avoid situations that produce a decrease in the resistance to blood flow from the heart to the body tissues. If this should occur, dangerously low levels of oxygen in the blood may occur (hypoxemia), which may lead to death.
The patient should avoid dehydration, high altitudes, respiratory infections such as flu, sudden immersion in cold water, recreational drug use, pregnancy (see more), prolonged exposure to external heat or fever, aspirin and other anti-inflammatory drugs that promote bleeding, and certain forms of anesthesia. Arrhythmias may develop over time in the Eisenmenger patient, as well as the tendency to bleed. |
