Exercise Concerns
Aerobic exercise is safe and recommended for most patients with MVP. Physical fitness and activity tend to reduce blood pressure and help avoid adverse symptoms.
However, there may be an increased susceptibility to dehydration and syncope (fainting). If there have been episodes of syncope, a family history of sudden death with MVP, significant valve regurgitation, or a history of blood clots, then strenuous sports activities should be avoided.
Also, if the patient has an enlarged left ventricle or has been prescribed anticoagulants, then competitive contact sports should not be engaged in.
Anyone with congenital heart disease, repaired or non-repaired, should consult with their cardiologist about physical activity to review the risks. |
